I don't get there very often
Showers are a little dark
Abbyland received one of TSG's highest rated reviews so far this year. It's a really pleasant place to stay and I only wish I could get there more often. They offer a very clean store & facilities. El Norteno's food is to die for!
Awesome Little Truck Stop to Visit – Worth The Stop!
Heading down Wisconsin Highway 29, you’ll enjoy a pretty drive – especially if it’s not the dead of winter. I was on my way to Wausau, WI and needed a place to stop for the night, so I figured I’d try out the little AmBest in Curtiss, called “Abbyland Truck Stop”. It’s just a little over halfway between Eau Claire, WI and Wausau as you’re going east on 29.
Approaching the truck stop, it looked small but there was obviously plenty of parking. Once off the highway, I had to be careful of the black, horse-drawn buggies driven by local folk of traditional faith & values.
Read on to see why I was so pleasantly surprised – and can’t wait for another trip to Wausau!
Even late at night on the weekend I stopped through, there was plenty of parking available.
Even though there are only 4 fuel lanes for big-rigs, they’re very open & easy to pull in & out if you need to fuel. Sticking with the theme of the entire facility, the fuel islands are quite clean and appear to be well-maintained.
The restrooms inside the C-Store aren’t huge by any stretch, but they’re large enough to accommodate the steady flow of business here. I was impressed by the cleanliness of the restrooms as much as any other part of the truck stop.
Abbyland has 4 shower rooms available to drivers at a really reasonable rate. Rarely can you find a clean shower anywhere in the country for $8, so I was again impressed, as they are very clean!
The only issues I noticed were:
- Lighting is somewhat dim for what I’m used to in a shower room.
- The sink has a motion-activated flow, which is a little awkward for wet-shaving.
Those minor details aren’t enough for me to really lower the rating of one of the nicest small truck stops I’ve visited this year.
I found a large grill and deli inside the main store, along with the typical and even not-so-typical convenience store food. Everything from fudge to fresh Wisconsin cheese.
Just across the street, I noticed a restaurant called El Norteno and decided to give it a shot. Wow! The service was nice for a little family place – but the food was absolutely amazing! I had one of the best meals I can remember in a long time for under $13.
If you stop by, you must try the Parrillada El Norte (pronounced parie-Yadda). I was so full of flavor and the cheeses just melted in my mouth. They make their own chorizo at the restaurant and the rest of the ingredients are fresh, too.
In additional to what’s been mentioned already, there’s a lot of novelties & stuff to browse in the store. Pick up a souvenir or stock up on whatever. (I had to get some fresh, local cheese.) You can even buy fishing licenses here!
A drivers lounge offers a place to relax outside of your truck.
Abbyland has a CAT scale with very easy access near the fuel islands. Behind the main store is an AmBest Service Center offering complete truck service from refrigeration service to diagnostics, 24-hour emergency road service and a truck wash.
