Review Summary

While the Flying J in Fort Stockton is a newer store, it doesn't appear to be maintained very well. This place is in a great location for a truck stop and has great potential, if they can clean it up.

Flying J in Fort Stockton, TX Truck Stop

West-Central Texas can always benefit from more truck stops with the ever-increasing commercial traffic along the I-20 and I-10 corridors. Fort Stockton, Texas is almost an inevitable place for professional drivers to stop in their travels along Interstate 10 to or from San Antonio. San Antonio is roughly 5 hours east from Fort Stockton and El Paso about 3 hours west.

The Flying J store in Fort Stockton is relatively new and, like any truck stop in the area, has a great potential for revenue by offering commercial truck & driver services.

FlyingJFtStockton_2239The semi parking lot is newer concrete and lit up well at night. Still, 109 parking spaces is never enough for an area like this.

All the spaces are straight-in stalls from what I saw. It’s tight in here and there is one entrance & one exit for big trucks.

This Flying J has 8 diesel lanes with bulk DEF at the pump. They’re well-maintained and are easy to get in & out. We could always wish for more room in front of the pay lanes to turn when exiting, since it’s pretty tight here as shown in the main photo.

I really like the layout & finish of the newer Pilot/Flying J stores and the restrooms are consistent with that.

FlyingJFtStockton_2237What I didn’t like here was the absence of toilet paper in several of the stalls. The stalls which did have that vital commodity, had it sitting on the top of the dispenser instead of rolling out neatly from it.

It was also discouraging to see the restrooms are obviously not being cleaned very often here. Counters, sinks and floors were dirty and had trash on them.

This location has 9 of the newly-finished shower rooms.

Unfortunately, I found the same issue in my shower room as I ran into with the restroom: lack of toilet paper.

Let’s think this through. If there is a lack of supply, whatever toilet paper there is would still be installed in the dispensers, right? So, the partial rolls sitting on top of the dispensers seems to indicate simple laziness of whoever is supposed to be maintaining showers & restrooms.

Aside from the TP issue, the towels had hair on them – some really long, some short & curly (yuck!), and I know they weren’t my hairs.

The floor had apparently been quickly mopped, as it still had filmy streaks from the mop. When the room got humid from the shower, the floor became slippery as can be even with my shoes on and it was obviously some kind of residue left from dirty mop water or cleaner they used on the floor.

Aside from the usual convenience store food, there’s a Subway and a Cinnabon inside this Flying J. I tried the Subway – and have lived to tell you about it.

FlyingJFtStockton_2238The guy who made my sandwich must have been learning how to build sandwiches as he had questions from the other person working with him. In between those questions, they chit-chatted between themselves through the process of serving me, the paying customer.

Apart from what I mentioned about the Subway staff, the Flying J staff seemed professional and courteous. There were a couple people staffing the registers & one at the Cinnabon counter but I saw no one cleaning during my visit.

You can find a small laundry room and very small game room here. Of course, there’s a CAT scale for you truck but not much else in the way of extra amenities. It’s Fort Stockton.
