A TSG Favorite! Wings America is a great place for truckers to stop & stay in western Iowa. This place is busy but the staff keeps it very clean & well-maintained.
The Wings America Flying J in Avoca, IA Truck Stop
You probably won’t have to be a long haul trucker for long to travel Interstate-80 through Iowa. It’s where I first drove as a team driver when fresh out of truck driving school, years ago.
Though Iowa doesn’t have any mountains, it’s hilly enough to make the drive across the state on I-80 seem like a long one. Fortunately, there are plenty of places for truckers to stop and here we’ll focus on one truck stop which may be underrated: Wings America in Avoca, Iowa.
None of us want to break down on the road, but if I had to choose where a breakdown would happen, Wings America would be one of my top choices in the Plains States. Read on to see why…
Wings America offers 200 parking spaces for big rigs in a very open, spacious area. The lot is paved and clean, with parking around the outside being straight-in and much of the parking in the middle being diagonal. It’s super-easy to park and get around in this parking lot.
Many oversize trucks stay the night here, as there’s a hotel right next door and tons of room in the truck stop lot for their huge rigs. As I write this, there are about 6 oversize rigs loaded with wind turbine tower sections parked across from my truck.
What I don’t like about this lot is the fact that it’s pretty dark. There are some fairly dim perimeter lights but away from the main building, it’s dang dark.
If Wings America adds better lighting to the parking lot, they’d get a “10” from TSG for parking!
TSG Tip: Keep in mind this truck stop fills up quickly at the end of the day. I always head out between 4-5 in the morning, so I can get a decent parking space by late afternoon.
There are a whopping 12 diesel fuel lanes equipped with DEF at the pump at Wings America, and they’re alway busy!
I appreciate the fact that the lanes are easy to get in & out, as well as the fact they’re maintained nicely.
Being a Flying J store, I am quite impressed by the restrooms in Wings America. The restrooms are finished very nicely for a truck stop and kept clean & stocked. Combine those details with the fact they’re big restrooms and Wings America has plenty of happy customers.
I have to start the showers review by saying, “Wow!”
Wings America has 15 showers rooms with modern styling, nice shower heads & tons of water pressure.
That’s 15 exceptionally clean showers. I’m hard-pressed to tell you where I’ve seen a cleaner shower room. Many places look like they’ve been mopped, with streaks or film on the floor. My shower floor looked polished. Even the mirror was lint & streak-free. Overall, the room was immaculate. Yeah, wow.
The towels smell fresh & clean but mine was slightly small. I’m an average-sized guy, so I’d imagine some of the larger folks might be wanting a bigger towel. This detail is the only reason the Showers part of the review didn’t get a perfect “10”.
In addition to the typical truck stop convenience food you find everywhere, Wings America also offers a Taco John’s, a Maid Rite AND an American Pie Cafe & Bakery!
Needless to say, this is a great place to stop to get a meal. Few places offer this many choices for food. Again, they look very clean.
